The chaplain handed Mrs. Tanaka the telegram. She opened it with trembling hands, already knowing what it would say.
"Dear Mrs. Tanaka: We regret to inform you that your son, Private First Class James Tanaka, was killed in action on Okinawa, June 12, 1945. He died serving his country with honor."
She read it three times, waiting for the words to change. They didn't.
A week later, a letter arrived—James's last, written three days before he died.
"Dear Mom, I think about you every day. Your garden. Your cooking. The way you hummed while you worked. I'm coming home. Wait for me."
